Here are the first pics of Shandies (bought last March) total cockpit strip out.

Work includes new bulkheads, move of fuel tank to stern locker, new prop tunnel and bearings, new(ish) Nanni 14 engine, bearers, control  new beams on bridge deck (Iroko and Oak)

Much rot and spongey wood was found so all new woodwork is of Iroko and Robbins 12mm marine ply. More photos to follow as the shiny stuff gets fitted!

Still a long way to go but getting to the positive side of things now!

Hi Calum,

Well you cant beat a tidy cabin!!. It brings back all sorts of horrors.  Its looking fab, It will be interesting to see how you tackle the seats and what materials you use.

Best Wishes

Hi Stephen,

Cockpit seating will be built on an Iroko frame, slotted to take plywood sides from floor to seats them selves...this will make assembly quick and very strong.

Seat tops, bridge deck and cockpit sole will be made of plywood covered in thin strips of iroko and underside covered in epoxy and cloth. Black sealant applied between iroko strips give a traditional look. Final coat of varnish will have a non slip additive applied to it so I don't end up on my bum with half of a tiller in my hand!

Weather here slightly inclement at the moment, so making new cockpit cleats (from Iroko) in nice cosy workshop as the snow piles up outside.

Regards

Sounds really interesting.  keep adding images as you go and it will soon generate interest from other members.  I'm keen to see how it progresses.

Good luck

Hi Calum,

Interesting reading. I own Wild Girl and I must confess was toying with the idea of selling up late last year, she really only needs a small amount of cosmetic work to get her back on the water however I pulled and poked about a bit and found the inevitable bits of rot here and there (in and around the cockpit mainly beneath the seat tops on the upstands to the lockers and at the rear corners. She's been covered over for a couple of years while i find every excuse in the book not to get on with the work. It's really encouraging to hear and see whats going on with Shandie, keep the posts and pictures coming.

I've decided to keep Wild Girl and get her back on the water to get some sailing in as soon as possible this season. I think the mistake I've made is to sail her home and take her apart without building up much of a rapour with her on the water, that was nearly three years ago. I intend to resolve this and when i see the kind of work you gents are regularly undertaking it gives me a big boost of motivation.

Thank you

Hi Ian,

That's great news.  Someone told me not so long ago that in reality the work is never done.  Ive got Helix nice and tidy but she still has a lot of work to finish her.  Ive kept her on the water all winter specifically to not end up with her getting left on the hard.

Again post some pics if you can be nice to see Wild Girl.

Good Luck

Hi folks,

Shandie refurb update.....new engine is now bolted down and new cockpit sole is under construction.

Unfortunately I suffered a bad stroke so am currently recovering...hopefully I will be 'allowed' to restart work in a month or so.

I hope to get Shandie in water for a month this season but she may not hit the water at all.

Meanwhile watch this space!

Hi Calum,

Best wishes to you Calum.  I'm sure your project will speed up your recovery, that and a little sunshine.  Sure looking forward to seeing the new cockpit and how things progress.
