Hi, I’ve been looking at online photos of grp Twisters. Have some owners put in a cabin roof liner?

Hi Paul,

I have  recently lined the saloon on my grp Twister. We used white plastic sofit board. It's only 9mm thick, light, easy to clean and very cheap. We cut it with a jigsaw with a fine toothed blade.

The holes in the picture are for deck fittings.

Kind regards

Mark

Thanks for the reply Mark. I’m assuming grp boats are built with a grp cabin lining and that some people have put in a removable roof lining to hide the fixings for cabin roof fixtures and because of condensation?

The answer to that is both yes and no!

All GRP Twisters originally were built with an integral GRP deck head moulding. We have this and there is insulation between it and the deck moulding. (There are also some voids which show up after a cold night).
After a while the internal moulding was discontinued. I suspect due to both cost and the fiddle of fitting it. ‘Shrinkflation’ is not new!

Newer boats have their deck heads lined in a variety of ways depending upon the yard/owner/builder’s preference.

Hi Mark

Very smart.

How will you cover up the holes? That would be interesting. I'd like to write it up and put it in the Archive as I think it will be useful for others.

Hi there - Just checking I have this right, the deck head moulding was filled with insulation during manufacture rather than you filling the void yourselves? Do you know what is in there?

thanks

Such insulation thats there was installed/fitted at build stage by Tylers.
I think it may have been some form of closed cell ‘foam in situ’ product.
If you are considering voyaging to high latitudes do bear in mind that the hull sides above and below waterline are uninsulated and get pretty cold!!

headlining.jpgImage EnlargerHi! Shelita (ex Annie C) came with headlinings installed by Robertsons of marine ply lined with foam and vinyl. The foam had disintigrated into nasty yellow dust so I removed them all. Removing the glued on foam became a nightmare so I cut new 3mm marine ply to the old patterns and painted the top side (my supplier tells me modern marine ply is not like the same quality as 35 years ago!). I glued and stapled the liner as you can see from the attached photo. New ply needed to be carefully checked for fit before upholstering and pre-drilled as the material I chose doesnt like being drilled! I found a couple of loose fixing battens in the process. This of course opened up the opportunity for me to look at installing some G10 backing plates to the underside of deck fittings and replacing lights with low consumption slim LED spots. The never ending renovation continues....
