Hi All,
Finally after a long wait and a lot of work (with lots still to do) Ahimsa is afloat. The lift in was not without its drama, the crane driver was worried about the position of the straps and the boat slipping, we shortend the forward chains by about 36 inches to trim the lift a little aft. I used old mooring rope to pad out the straps forward and aft to protect the teak deck capping, however the aft straps got moved forward and left some marks on my hull. If anyone as any advise on experince craning in thier boats would love to hear it (should have post this request for this weeks ago)
Then more drama, boat engine wasn't cooling quite right and decided the next day to dry the boat out alonside to examine the seacock, actually this went pretty ok and the boat settled alongside very well, used a bag of sand on the deck plenty of lines and line around mast to shore to list the boat toward the pier wall with lots of fenders deployed. Got the seacock sorted which was badly blocked between the ball vaule and the through hull fitting.
Long wait then to make sure she floated ok on the incoming tide which she did and engine running fine. On the mooring now and looking forward to a shake down sail this coming weekend.
Still have lots of cleaning to do on deck and the list of jobs for next winter is growing already.
Happy sailing all
Derek
Excellent news Derek, its quite something to launch a boat you've never sailed, especially after a lot of hard work. You must feel great about it. Regarding the lift in, all I can say is that the guy that runs the yard that roquetta was in said to me, in a rolling West Country farmers accent 'there will be a loud bang d' reckly, that'll be the strop moving forward, all the twisters do it when we lift' em in'. Sure enough, just before she reached the safety of the rising tide, there was. He knew what he was doing. I think that when they are dangled from strops, Hull shapes like the twister/folk boat type have a very odd balance. Most of the weight is on the aft strop and the stem seems made for a strop to slide up. I have no answer I'm afraid short of a 4 point lift,
Regards,
Justin
Hi Stephen and Justin
Thanks for the replies, Stephen I keep Ahimsa at a mooring in Mulroy Bay Donegal, and she was launched from a small boat yard call Meavgh Boat Yard which is marked as Fannys Bay on the Chart. I have an interesrting channel to navigate on the way in and out with very fast tides in the narrows, but I know the place well. My play patch will be the North Coast Tory Island to Rathlin Island and around Malin Head when the weather cooperates.
Justin, the crane driver I had never lifted a twister and was more use to fin keel jobs but he was experienced enough and we had a good discussion before the lift and looked at photos and video of the lift out. But none of this makes it any less nerve recking, I guess we can just keep building on experinece am already planning the lift out in early October and hope to improve last lift. But I guess as long as they get in and out of the water safely that's the objective achieved.
Keep the Youtube videos going they are great,
Regards
Derek
