I have rather a lot of time to ponder the trivial at the moment. One thing that has been bothering me is the name of our yacht.

I own a Twister and I always refer to her as a Twister or a Holman Twister. I never add “28” in discussion. However, my youtube page is called Twister 28 as “Twister “ was taken.
The fantastic Facebook group set up by Justin is called Twister 28 worldwide.
if you look on Sailboatdata for the Twister it’s named Twister 28.

Am I correct that the design name is Twister and not Twister 28? And if so is it time for a campaign for correct nomenclature?

You are right David.

The design started as the 'Twister' and remained so for quite a few years. I don't think that I've ever seen any reference by either Holman/Holman and Pye or Uphams to anything other than 'Twister. Tyler's build records are headed Twister 28 ft but that wasn't used elsewhere.   The '28' crept in later. This was when Tylers, seeking to capitalise on their range of once popular moulds brought many out of retirement, re-furbished them and launched their 'Tufglas' range. They mainly sold the hulls to smaller boatbuilders and owners for 'home completion'. I believe they did also fully complete some boats themselves.  The Twister became the Tufglas 28 with the first hull moulded in 1978. It was, of course identical to the original subject to variations in internal arrangement and fit out.

I, like you and all other aficionados', don't need to be told how long the one and only Twister is!

Cheers

John

Well I’m in complete agreement especially as Twister of Mersea (No1) is 27.6” and therefore would not qualify

Agree, of course, Twister is correct. I think the 28 suffix may have arisen because there may be - shock horror and heresy! - another Twister class. Sometimes, when searching for and through for sale listings, using just Twister as the search term, I came across some listings for a rather hideous ultra modern design, the absolute antithesis of a Twister, known as the Twister 36. This page currently has two listed. So perhaps brokers inserted the 28/36 suffix, to distinguish between the two.
