If you are seeking a real ‘Classic’ that is guaranteed to turn heads, sails like a witch, is easily handled and will look after you in a blow then read on:

Wooden Twisters

The first Twisters were all built in wood and there were variations in that whilst nearly all had straight coachroofs there was the odd low doghouse as well.

Most have stood the test of time very well and the traditional wooden interior has an atmosphere that is quite special.

If you are thinking of buying then the best advice is to engage a surveyor who specialises in wooden yachts.

GRP Twisters

All the mouldings were made by the Tyler Boat Company. Tyler’s were one of the pioneers of GRP construction and very well regarded in their field.

In the early days of GRP construction there was no such thing as building down to a price or weight. This certainly resulted in all Twisters being very strongly built; as a result of which they have stood up well to the test of time.

Tylers hulls do not seem to have been particularly prone to osmosis and only one really bad case has ever come to our notice. But do remember that any surveyor, being mindful of his indemnity insurance, will probably manage to find some trace somewhere! The majority of boats will have been epoxied by now anyway.

Whilst the hull and deck mouldings are particularly robust occasional problems have occurred with rudders either where water has got in or where there may be signs of the two halves of the moulding separating in the area of the stock.. Both problems are soluble rather than terminal!

Mast steps

The original Uphams completed yachts utilised a very adequate deck mounted fabricated steel mast step to span the two main bulkheads and spread the load.

A few home builders and professional yards underestimated the loads involved and did not make adequate provision. Most should have been sorted by now but if there isn’t an adequate looking mast step check for deformation.

Composite Twisters

Composite yachts, where the coachroof and cockpit were constructed in timber, are arguably the best looking but they need to be maintained. Check for signs of leakage which if left will lead to rot and expensive repairs.

Engines

Most early Twisters were fitted with petrol engines (no problem if properly maintained and operated) but virtually all have been re-powered with diesels in the 10-20hp range.

Gas installation in the galley

Original gas installations with the bottle in the galley locker are a no-no as far as insurers are concerned and again most boats have been retro-fitted to acceptable standards.

Good Hunting!

For Sale "Polywaffle "
Summary

Photo of Polywaffle, on sale at £26,500Pollywaffle is a well proven ocean cruiser, equipped with roller furling headsail, windvane self steering, radar (the 3 biggest boons to the
short-handed cruising sailor), self tailing winches etc. All GRP, built 1980, but has spent at least 14 years of her life laid up ashore.

Professionally epoxied 2000 after 7 year layup when hull was bone dry & with no sign of any previous osmosis. Extensive sail wardrobe, generally little used, some not at all. Stored ashore since 2004, she has just had a new Beta 20HP engine, new stainless steel fuel tank, & new cockpit drain seacocks fitted. She is in the middle of a fairly extensive refit, which unfortunately, for various reasons, I am unable to complete. All the work is within the remit of the competent DIYer. Much of what is required has already been purchased & is included in the sale.

Although it will not take that much to get her sailing again, she is looking in
a bit of a state because of the number of ongoing jobs that have now come to a halt, & hence I am offering her at a knockdown price for someone willing to take on a bit of a project.

She has full British Part 1 Registry

We lived & cruised in Pollywaffle for 3 years. Apart from a few items that were sold a few years ago, most of what came out of her is up in my loft & is included in the sale, which should be pretty much all you need to
get sailing.

Also available is a brand new 4 man Avon Ocean canister liferaft, brand new
Mercury 3.3HP outboard, & also a 2nd hand Taylors diesel heater, all of which I bought recently (nothing wrong with the original paraffin heater, but was planning to swap for a diesel one so I could run it off the main fuel tank). These to be sold separately, but the person buying the boat will have first dibs.

Underwater, she was stripped back to gelcoat in 2007, and is now finished with three coats of Blakes Underwater Primer, two coats of Blakes hard racing antifouling (non-erodible) in blue, and two coats of Blakes Tiger Extra erodible in white. There is a navy boot top.

Indigo is one of very few Twisters with a teak deck. The original teak deck was removed in 2005, and new teak was professionally laid onto a mastic base on the GRP sub-deck, so that there are no screws securing it. The deck has been carefully maintained since, and is never scrubbed.
