Upgrading the Heater

Cracks discovered in the heater

Whilst fitting out last Spring, careful examination of our trusty heater revealed cracks developing, which although not yet serious, could prove terminal at an inopportune moment.

Time to replace and upgrade the heater

It seemed an ideal time for a replacement, upgrading while we were at it. I knew of at least one outlet which had some attractive offers on at that time. The following Sunday afternoon found me carefully examining the choice on display and checking measurements to ensure a good fit in the space available. My mind made up, I made my purchase.

Fitting the heater

Fitting was easy, even though the new heater was 2” bigger than its predecessor and it was soon in its place and working. The early Spring chill in the cabin was quickly replaced by a gentle warmth. No sound was heard but a gentle hiss. I removed the old model from the boat, managing to break it as I consigned it to the wheely bin on the pontoon.

I returned to the boat for the final test. Yes, the measurements had been accurate. The kettle fitted snugly on one gas ring, the inverted clay plant pot sat comfortably over the other, radiating a cheerful; warmth.

PS: this use of a plant pot is not an original idea as I first spotted it in PBO some years ago. It is cheap and effective, and being a Yorkshireman, that appeals to me, but it does have its limitations and needs the care associated with the use of gas cookers on a boat.
