Hello All,
Introducing myself as the new owner of HEDHYU, a 1979 GRP Twister that's been on the quay in Marseille for five or six years. I'm transporting her by road back to Mylor late this July, so expect to hear from me as I draw on your collective experience for advice during her restoration. Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Jonny Mutch
Hi John,
The extra rudder is part of a self steering system, linked by a slim stainless rod and a couple of universal rotating joints to the top of the rudder stock.
There is a wind-vane, but I've so far only seen it stashed deep in one of the forepeak lockers. The seller didn't know what make it was, but from what I've seen, the bevel gears seem substantial and well made... Until I get the boat to the UK I'll have no idea how it mounts or works. All is know it that it's black.
I'll keep you posted!
Jonathan
So after a year waiting, its finally week 1 of the restoration of my pretty Twister HEDHYU... she's in the shed at The Falmouth Boat Co but hasn't fared well after a year in the yard since I rescued her from Marseille...come April she'll have completed phase 1 of 3 in preparation for high latitudes and family adventures. Works this time round are to upgrade to SOLAS standards, a Copper Coat bottom, new standing and running rigging...everything to navigate with confidence offshore. Stage 2 is a navigation upgrade to include plotter, HD radar, AIS and ocean safety gear. Stage 3 is to repaint the decks and hull...the pretty stuff that can wait a year or so. Feeling a bit sick having seen the photos form the yard, but excited to launch in the Spring.
Hi Jonathan,
Good luck with the refit. Sounds like it will take a while. My twister is close by and will be getting work done over the winter too. Haven't decided where yet but Falmouth Boat co is on the list so they may end up stable mates.
Looks like you have the same trim tab fitted as me. If you weren't sure its a Hydra system. I don't see the wind vane box on the picture but it should all look like this Hydra Trim Tab.

Hi Dave,
Yes, it's a Hydra Autosteer...seems to be in good condition...Looking forward to playing with it. Seems I'll just trim the sails, leave the tiller free and let the wind vane steer. Let's see, otherwise I've my eyes on a Monitor if I can bear the scaffold look.
The Falmouth Boat Co are a very friendly bunch and the family owned yard has mix of pretty classics, blue water yachts and a reassuring number of work boats such as the RNLI and the Scillies Ambulance. I also looked at Mylor where I had a boat back in the mid nineties, but I felt they'd gone a bit 'Hamble'. The Rustler yard opposite did't reply. The FBCo also refitted 3 of the long keel Golden Globe yachts, so they know their stuff.
I'll look out for you...
Jonny
Here are the photos from the yard as she went into the shed to start work.
I couldnt upload them so here's a link to Dropbox:

Hi Jonny,
So glad to hear that work has started. I hear good reports of FBC. You were wise to judge Mylor as a "bit Hamble". We keep Sea Miste on the marina there and are happy with the service we receive as berth holders. However, in 2014 we had a big refit done by their shipwrights and painters, who are superb, but the project manager treated us dreadfully so we complained to the owner of the business and got a satisfactory outcome. A very unhappy few months but a good final result.
You have probably thought about this but our previous secretary posted a heads up to members some years ago about the need to check the chainplates. We fitted new standing rigging in 2016 and before doing so pulled three plates at random. The first two looked sound but the third was sufficiently corroded to make us renew them all. We had them made up locally. A good thing about Falmouth is the range of trades available.
If you are around before the end of the season we are often aboard (we live in Hampshire but spend much of the summer sailing locally) so do look us up on berth D36.
All the best,
Philip Collcutt
Hi Philip,
Thanks for the advice on the chainplates...I'll speak with the yard today as they are replacing the toe rails now...so it's well timed advice.
I may not be down to Falmouth before the season is out, but I'll certainly keep an eye out for you.
Best regards,
Jonny
