Hello,

Allthough our boats are never finished, Helix is back on the water and weve been out a few times. Some good sailing is going to be had over the next few months She has her original head sails that hank on, and after taking some advice I'm going to go with these.  I have a furler but I'm going to stick with the set up in place.

Her mainsail has gone, I have a couple of Twister mainsails but Helix has this extra long mast and the sails I have look like they have a double reef in.  The best of the two just don't set anywhere near right.  So I need a new main.  But what type. I have a limited budget. What are my options regarding sail materials and taking in to account shes a classic boat, so a sail that will compliment her and not look like an add on.  Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank  you

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

My go to sailmaker is Willie Leitch of Tarbert Loch Fyne.

When I got my Twister "Shandie" at start of season, he said that he thought he had at least 3 differing plans for differing twisters. Might be worth a shout?

Good luck

Hi Calum,

Might be worth giving him  call, quite a distance though.  Helix hs a rather unique rig.  taller mast and  fractional rig.  Ive got a furler for her with two sails, but the Forestay is shorter than standard rigs.  Ive two Twister main sails, but these are too short.  Luckily ive got the original headsails so I'm hanking these on.

How is Shandie coming along.?.

Thank you

Hi Stephen,

Shandie is progressing slowly, cockpit has been stripped back to bare  hull, new floor bearers, bulkheads, new cabin facings, just installing solid Iroko coamings, New prop tunnel with new bearings waiting to be fitted and new (2 yrs old) Nanni 14 engine been test run and now aboard awaiting connection!

Me Knackered and skint!

Twill be worth it!

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

We had our new sails made by Crusader and they are really good, not too expensive and the service was brilliant. They came all the way from Falmouth to Tollesbury, Essex to measure her up and they have a first year service for free. Whenever we have had any questions they have been quick to reply and helpful on the phone, nothing ever seems like too much trouble. We dealt with a chap called Paul. http://www.crusadersails.com/

If you want classic sails then I'd try James Lawrence http://jameslawrencesailmakers.com/ or maybe closer to you there's Ratseys  http://www.ratseysails.co.uk/, the only thing with classic sails is that they come at a price.

I hope that helps.

Best wishes,

Katie

Hi Stephen, I’m glad you’ve got Helix sailing again. I asked the forum a similar question when I bought  Cabrach in 2012. The replies I got then made me choose Sanders Sails of Lymington. Not the cheapest, but my fully battened mainsail has lasted well. Peter Sanders has given personal service. He came across to Emsworth and checked out the mast for sliders as well as measuring up. Also when I changed the roller reefing foil he recut the Genoa to suit. Have a think about what exactly you want in the way of reefs. With 3/4 rig you’ll probably be changing reefs more often than headsails so the right sizes of the reefs and perhaps a flattener are critical. Martin

Hello Martin,

Thanks for the information. I believe Malcolm had four reef points in his main.  Ill have a good talk with a couple of sailmakers about how to balance the smaller headsail and larger main.
